Helping Students Make the Right International HE Choices
A conference to help higher education advisors make sense of an ever expanding world of opportunity for their students.
Tuesday 9th June 2015 - London conference at Istituto Marangoni
Wednesday 10th June 2015 - Birmingham conference at Aston University
By now it is fair to say that the benefit of international experience is widely understood. When even Bill Gates defines his biggest regret as not learning a language, and where Google’s guidelines for hiring new recruits suggest preparedness for life in the 21st century is more important than any narrow skillset, it is quite clear that encouraging students to engage with the wider world makes sense both personally and professionally.
As the range of higher education options becomes both more complex and accessible to British students, how can we point them in the right direction, particularly when most paths abroad are not yet well established and evidence of successful outcomes is largely anecdotal? The aim of this conference is to offer some guidance to this key question.
For some students, leaving home at 18 and spending three years integrating in another country will be the best option. For others, an exchange programme or a double degree in two locations might make more sense. Would work experience abroad be a better idea than studying abroad or would a combination of both be the right idea? There is plentiful evidence to suggest that students who travel once will continue to do so in the future, often seeking out more adventurous destinations as they develop. However, what should that first step be?
In this conference we will address the following options in international higher education:
- Going to an international university in the United Kingdom
- How a full degree abroad benefits British students
- Gaining a British university degree abroad
- International opportunities for work experience
- Education as a means to migration – Australia, Canada
- Full degree abroad vs exchange programmes – an overview of research and student experience
We will also look at a range of other issues relating to international higher education, including:
- Applying to international universities through Ucas. What does this development mean for applicants and their advisors?
- A Q&A session on entry requirements, selection procedures, deadlines etc. at international universities
- An overview of the financial reality of studying abroad
- Why do parents allow their children to study abroad? Parents of internationally mobile students will explain why they encouraged their child to go to university in another country
We hope this conference will give advisors the confidence to encourage their students to seek out new paths in higher education.
