"International Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (ITESS)", a 4-year degree designed to develop culturally responsive teachers for the rapidly expanding world of international and bilingual schools, was launched at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in September 2018.

Built on the success of the award-winning "International Teacher Education for Primary School (ITEPS)" programme, ITESS provides students with the opportunity to learn from professional specialists of various cultural backgrounds and complete their practice periods at various international and bilingual schools in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond. The couse will be delivered at the Zernike campus in the city of Groningen and offered in cooperation with University College Absalon (Denmark).

As an ITESS student, you can specialise in any of the following subjects:

  • History
  • Mathematics
  • German
  • English

You may intially choose one subject and add another one during your exchange semester at an overseas partner university. NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences aims to continually expand the range of specialisations within ITESS in the next few years.

Career prospects

Career prospects for ITESS graduates are very promising, as there are more than 8,000 international schools across the world with great demand for qualified and culturally competent teachers. With the adaptability and cultural awareness gained from the international opportunities during your time in ITESS, you will be well prepared for a meaningful and adventurous career in international education.

Entry requirements and application process

ITESS is available to anyone with three A Levels.

The deadline for application is 1 May.

Assessment days will take place on 19 January, 16 March, 25 May and 29 June 2019.

Taster Day

Prospective ITESS candidates can join NHL Stenden for a taster session on the following dates:

  • 17 November 2018
  • 9 February 2019
  • 13 April 2019
  • 15 June 2019

Participants will learn more about the programmes through attending workshops and speaking directly with the faculty and current students.
