Course Description

Chemistry is about developing new substances and materials, for example for a new type of synthetic material or for the food and cosmetics industry. It also often lays the foundation for new medicine and makes crucial contributions to more sustainable products. There’s much more to chemistry than just molecules reacting with each other.

The first year of the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is identical, so you can still switch between these two programmes throughout the first year. The second year of the Chemistry programme focuses on deepening your knowledge and choosing one of the following specialisations:

  • Smart Materials – materials that, for example, produce electricity or change temperature
  • Sustainable Chemistry and Energy – how can chemistry be used to create greater sustainability and cleaner energy.
  • Chemistry of Life – how molecules in living organisms perform chemical processes

The University of Groningen also harbours interdisciplinary fields such as systems chemistry and synthetic biology. Our research in chemistry and materials science is among the best in the world. Our research
in materials science even ranks fourth in the THES global Top 10 of institutes in materials science. And just last year our top researcher Ben Feringa built an electrically driven four-wheeled molecule.

Chemistry graduates find jobs mainly in research & development ormanagement positions. Examples include: food processing industry, pharmaceutical industry, synthetics industry, paints industry, computer industry, biotechnology companies, examples of enterprises: Shell, Proctor and Gamble, Philips, Akzo
Nobel.
