General Information

Theology and Religious Studies is a two-year Master's degree programme offered by the faculty's Graduate School Theology and Religious Studies. The aim of the programme is to create interaction, collaboration and competition between students while guaranteeing intensive support and hands-on experience with research.

In the best traditions of scholarship in the humanities, teaching and research are closely related as the programme is taught by senior professors of the interdisciplinary research groups of the faculty's Centre for Religious Studies: Jewish, Christian and Islamic Origins; Comparative and Historical Study of Religion; Christianity, Philosophy and Culture. The programme is offered to talented and advanced students, either foreign or Dutch, who have a wide-ranging interest in religion and wish to study in a challenging academic environment that stimulates personal ambition.

In this Research Master's Programme you will study how religion is embedded in present-day and in historical cultural contexts. You will explore the impact of local and global socio-economic and political developments on religion, and how religion contributes to such developments. A staff member whose research interests in religion matches yours best, will act as your supervisor throughout the programme.

Career Prospects

The purpose of the Research Master’s programme is to equip and prepare advanced students to carry out postgraduate academic research in the PhD programme of the Groningen Graduate School ThRS or in that of any other School, or to apply for positions for which academic research skills and experience are required. The programme offers a thorough training in the theories and methods of the various subdisciplines of theology and/or of religious studies, focusing on skills, knowledge and understanding.

The degree of Master of Arts in Theology and Religious Studies enables students to apply for PhD-positions, other positions for which academic research skills are required, positions in publishing, positions as civil servants in larger cities and governmental departments and teaching positions.
