Course Description

Life Sciences at HAN University of Applied Sciences is a hands-on 4-year Bachelors course that is taught in English. During your studies, you gain theoretical knowledge, but you also spend more than half of your time doing practical work. So when you graduate, you are well prepared for the job market.

The Life Sciences course at HAN University of Applied Sciences focuses on research: bio molecules, cell biology, genetics, genetic engineering, immunology, carcinogenesis, virology and molecular plant biology. Students take, among others, classes in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Molecular Plant Biology, Immunology, and Communication skills.

Throughout the course you will participate in projects with an increasing level of complexity. In the third year, besides attending lecturers, you will undertake a work placement for a whole semester. In the fourth and final year, you will complete an independent graduation assignment, which involves planning and conducting your own experiments.

The Life Sciences department at HAN does not focus on teaching students to regurgitate uniform knowledge. Contrarily, it focuses on individual talent, developing this talent and learning to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Admission

Admission to this degree programme will be conducted through a decentralised (university-based) selection process. As a consequence of the decentralised selection, prospective students must register in Studielink earlier than for the usual procedure to allow time for the selection procedure.

Students will be selected based on (a combination of) grades, motivation, critical thinking skills and basic scientific knowledge.

The application requirements are sufficient scores in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics as well as diploma of secondary education (General Certificate of Secondary Education – A level or International Baccalaureate).

Career Prospects

After graduating, you can choose from many employers in both the commercial and public sector. For example, you may work at a research institute, a hospital, a health agency, or a pharmaceutical company. You could be involved in researching diseases, designing new drugs, undertaking quality assurance, or working as a product or marketing specialist.

Typical jobs for graduates

As a Life Sciences graduate, you will have countless employers to choose from, including health care providers and commercial enterprises. Many of our Life Sciences graduates work in molecular biology research labs, for example. You can also choose to continue your studies. HAN's Life Sciences graduates often go on to successfully complete Masters degree courses.
