Course Description

Join the crème de la crème in business communication

If you choose to study International Business Communication in Nijmegen you will be able to combine learning academic research techniques with practical business competencies. We are looking for thinkers and doers with an international orientation. That is unique in the Netherlands and we are one of very few programmes in Europe to focus sharply on the practical, analytical, cultural and linguistic aspects of business. In particular, we place strong emphasis on the influence of national and organisational culture on companies and institutions that operate across borders.

Thanks to our network, we are able to arrange excellent group internships, and we are selective (max. 50 students per year). You will find yourself in a dynamic learning environment with smart, motivated follow students and you will receive close personal guidance from highly experienced members of faculty.

We are not hierarchical and we are not an MBA. As a future executive you will need to be able to assess the quality of business research. A lot of business studies lack academic rigour. Our graduates learn how to separate the wheat from the chaff.

We offer students one English-taught specialisation: International Business Communication

Combine key competences with knowledge of international business

Businesses around the world increasingly communicate in English, both internally and to outside audiences. And, often, that is a problem. How can such communication on the workfloor and by those in leading positions be made as effective as possible?

Understanding the factors that influence the success of international and intercultural communication is crucial, especially where employees are culturally and linguistically diverse (as in multinationals, cross-border merger companies or local organisations with a multicultural workforce) and in organisations whose primary target audiences are culturally and linguistically diverse. Effective communication is essential. This programme gives you the theoretical knowledge and practical insights you need to analyse and critically evaluate the success of professional communication in general, and IBC in particular, in a multinational, multicultural and multilingual context.

More specifically, you will explore the impact of globalisation, the role of linguistic and cultural diversity, and the consequences of language strategy, and how such issues shape, determine and affect the effectiveness of communication. In Nijmegen we take an interdisciplinary perspective, combining state-of-the-art research with theory, intercultural communication, applied linguistics, communication theory and management studies. The courses are practical, promoting insight into global corporate communications; interpersonal intercultural communication, corporate language strategy, English as a lingua franca, managing a culturally diverse workforce, marketing, CSR, international stakeholder relations, and crisis communication across cultures. You will work on case studies, conducting your own research or participating in staff projects or internships. Guest lecturers keep you up to date with current developments and topical research.
