Programme introduction

Acquire a solid foundation in sustainable energy system management. Topics include modelling, technologies, markets & innovation, scientific framework (law, policy, societal acceptance, environmental aspects). Work on real-life projects, and follow the specialisation semester at a partner institute or at Hanze UAS. The specialisations you can choose are system integration and optimisation or sustainable energy management. This programme is for students with a background in economics, managerial engineering or equivalent.

Course structure

The programme is divided into three semesters. During the core semester, you acquire a solid foundation in economics and business concepts. These are related to innovative energy project design and related aspects of the energy business. Combined with planning, strategic decision-making and communication, this core knowledge will allow you to analyse energy business challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective. The core semester can only be followed at Hanze UAS.

Themes of the core semester are:

  • Energy Transition Context
  • Energy Technologies, Plants & Integration
  • System Innovation Processes
  • Markets, Finance, and Law
  • Models & Scenarios for Strategic Decision Making
  • Research Methodology

The second semester focuses on System Innovation Management (Netherlands) or on Sustainable Energy Management (Spain). In-depth conceptual lectures are accompanied by practical assignments and technically orientated company visits. As a student, you are required to actively contribute to the course content by presenting papers and carrying out research tasks.

The third and last semester you will apply your knowledge and skills in a research project at a company or a research centre. Based on this research you will write your thesis under the supervision of a (core) professor, a professor of the specialisation and a professor from the project provider.

Career opportunities

With renewable energy playing a key role in efforts to combat climate change, postgraduate from a wide range of backgrounds can play their part in this growing industry. Clean and renewable energy sources are increasingly familiar to all of us, and they are more important than ever as governments attempt to meet international targets for reducing carbon emissions. A renewable energy engineer is involved with the production of energy through natural resources, such as the extraction of oil and gas, as well as from renewable or sustainable sources of energy, including biofuels, hydro, wind and solar power, whereas sustainable energy system manager consults and manages energy firms on their performance.
