About the programme

Avans University of Applied Science campus

You are quick to see how machines and processes work. You understand what steps you need to take to improve the performance of companies. Industrial Engineering and Management equips you with the knowledge and skills to work on large technical installations and to manage the maintenance of mammoth vessels and the repair of aircraft. You have self-confidence, you approach your tasks responsibly and you are keen to look beyond borders.

The key subject areas are technology, maintenance, management, leadership and negotiating. You will visit companies in the Netherlands and abroad to carry out practical assignments for them. Many fellow students will come from abroad and the programme will be taught in English.

You will gain international work experience during your studies as you may spend up to 1.5 years abroad for work placements, a semester exchange or a graduation assignment. As an Industrial Engineering and Management graduate the world is your workplace.

Curriculum overview

In the first year, you will acquire basic knowledge in key areas of engineering studies, such as technology, maintenance, management, leadership and negotiation. You will draw up cost projections, schedules and reports, as well as visiting various companies in the Netherlands and abroad.

The second year is about deepening and applying your knowledge, while the final two years focus on company strategy and asset management.

Practical experience

In your third and fourth years, you may spend spart of your degree outside of the Netherlands. In the third year, you will complete a 20-week work placement at assistant level with a domestic or international organisation. In this year, you will also have the opportunity to take an international minor at Avans or go on an exchange to one of our partner universities.

Your final year is centred on a graduation assignment. As part of this assignment, you will investigate a company's problem and develop possible solutions.

Careers prospects

There is high global demand for industrial engineers with a specialization in maintenance. The majority of International Engineering and Management alumni work as maintenance consultants, maintenance managers, reliability engineers or asset managers.
