Type of Course and Duration:

Bachelor of Science, 3 Years

Course Description:

As a chemical engineer you deal with chemical processes on a major scale. You can be involved in designing a new factory, the production process for a new product, or optimising existing production processes. In all cases you work with many other people.

The great thing about chemical technology is that you are involved in the development of new products or processes from A to Z. You will be learning about much more than just materials and how they react with one another. Chemical engineers at the University of Groningen, for example, have developed a highly efficient plastic solar cell and are now getting it ready for large-scale production. They are also working on the efficient extraction of biodiesel from the Indonesian jatropha plant and special rubbers for high-tech  applications in clothing and footwear.

If you find it hard to choose between a Bachelor’s degree programme in chemistry or in chemical  engineering, Groningen is the place to be. The first year of both programmes is identical so you don’t have  to make a definite choice until your second year.

The best career prospects are in business, for example at Shell, Proctor & Gamble, Philips or AkzoNobel. Chemical engineers can also work in advisory, controlling and management positions. Examples include:  Oil industry, Chemical industry, Food processing industry, Pharmaceuticals industry and Environmental technology.
